Our story

Different by Design Apparel started as an idea that lived quietly for a long time.

For years, this brand existed as a concept - something talked about, imagined, refined, and left waiting for the “right time.” Like many good ideas, life kept moving, and the moment never quite felt perfect.

Then everything changed.

When Shannon fell pregnant with twins, it prompted a pause and a perspective shift. That was the moment we realised there may never be a “right time”, and that sometimes the only way forward is to stop waiting and simply begin.

So that’s what we did.

Both Mish and Shannon live with mental illness’ and that experience became one of the biggest inspirations behind the brand.

Different by Design was built on the decision to back ourselves, from a place of wanting people to feel seen, accepted, and comfortable being exactly who they are - different, emotional, creative, overwhelmed, passionate, imperfect and human. To turn years of thought into action, and to create something meaningful rather than letting it stay an idea forever. 

It’s a brand shaped by commitment, balance, and the belief that progress doesn’t come from perfection; it comes from showing up and doing the work.

Every piece we create reflects that mindset. DbDa is for people who are building their own paths, navigating change, and choosing to move forward anyway. It’s about confidence, intention, and taking ownership of where you've been, what you've been through and where you’re headed.

Different by Design is more than apparel. It’s a reflection of lived experience, humour, honesty, mental health, and the belief that being different was never something to hide.

This is only the beginning, but it’s a beginning we’re proud of.
